An apparatus for reversing inhaled anesthesia includes a filter for removing one or more anesthetic agents from gases passing therethrough, as well as a component for elevating CO2 levels in gases that are to be inhaled by a subject. The CO2 level-elevating component facilitates an increase in the ventilation of the subject without resulting in a significant decrease in the subject's PaCO2 level and, thus, a decrease in the rate at which blood flows through the subject's brain. A method of reversing the effects of inhaled anesthesia includes increasing the rate of ventilation of an anesthetized subject while causing the subject to inhale gases with elevated amounts of CO2 and while filtering anesthetic agents from such gases.
L'invention concerne un appareil permettant d'inverser les effets d'une anesthésie inhalée. Ledit appareil comprend un filtre permettant de supprimer un ou plusieurs agents anesthésiques présents dans les gaz le traversant, ainsi qu'un composant permettant d'élever les niveaux de CO2 dans les gaz destinés à être inhalés par un sujet. Le composant d'élévation de niveau de CO2 facilite l'augmentation de la ventilation du sujet sans entraîner de diminution significative du niveau de PaCO2 du sujet et, par conséquent, de diminution du débit selon lequel le sang circule dans le cerveau du sujet. L'invention concerne également un procédé permettant d'inverser les effets d'une anesthésie inhalée, ce procédé consistant à augmenter le débit de ventilation d'un sujet sous anesthésie, tout en lui faisant inhaler des gaz contenant des taux élevés de CO2 et en filtrant les agents anesthésiques présents dans ces gaz.
