An apparatus for adjusting the body temperature of a patient comprises an enclosure defining an interior space for receiving at least a portion of a patient's body therein. The enclosure is adapted for substantially sealingly enclosing the portion of the patient's body within the interior space with the enclosure. Heat transfer liquid may then be circulated through the interior space of the enclosure via an inlet and an outlet for flow over the patient's body in direct liquid contact therewith to promote heat transfer between the patient's body and said heat transfer liquid. The heat transfer liquid may be either warmer or cooler than the patient's body temperature, to either warm or cool the portion. Controlled cooling may be employed to induce therapeutic hypothermia, while controlled warming may be employed to counteract unintended hypothermia. The apparatus further comprises a portable control unit that includes a liquid delivery system, a power source, a control system and a user interface for powering and controlling the liquid delivery system.
Un appareil de permettant de régler la température corporelle d'un patient comprend une enceinte définissant un espace intérieur destiné à recevoir au moins une partie du corps du patient. Cette enceinte est conçue de façon à sensiblement enfermer de manière étanche la partie du corps du patient dans l'espace intérieur avec cette enceinte. Un liquide de transfert thermique peut ensuite être circulé à travers cet espace intérieur de l'enceinte via un orifice d'entrée et un orifice de sorties afin que ce liquide s'écoule sur le corps du patient en contact direct avec celui-ci de façon à favoriser un transfert thermique entre le corps du patient et ce liquide de transfert thermique. Ce liquide de transfert thermique peut être soit plus chaud soit plus froid que la température du corps du patient, de façon à réchauffer ou à refroidir cette partie. Un refroidissement commandé peut-être utilisé pour réduire une hypothermie thérapeutique, alors qu'un réchauffement commandé peut-être utiliser de façon à compenser une hypothermie indésirable. Cet appareil comprend aussi une unité de commande portable qui comprend un système de distribution de liquide, une source électrique, un système de commande et une interface utilisateur permettant d'alimenter électriquement et de commander le système de distribution de liquide.
