APPARATUS FOR ANALYSIS OF COMBUSTIBLE SUBSTANCES Abstract of the Invention A method and apparatus for the analysis of substances by providing a metallic oxide sensor as a detector in combination with a gas chromatograph employing a carrier gas. The mixture of the carrier gas with the gas or gases to be analyzed is passed through a separation column and into a chamber where the constituents thereof impinge on the surface of the sensor. When a combustible compound, such as carbon monoxide, is present in the carrier gas, the metallic oxide is reduced causing a change in resistance which is a function of the concentration of the carbon monoxide in the carrier gas. Combining the metallic oxide combustible gas sensor with a simple gas chromatographic apparatus makes it possible to identify the combustible gas on the basis of its retention time in the separation column. The magnitude of the response is used as a measure of the combustible gas concentration.
