ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE A method of gasifying matter capable of being gasified includes providing a reaction chamber for containing the matter. The matter is fed into the reaction chamber to form a bed of matter therein, an oxygen-containing gas is fed into the reaction chamber, and the matter is then pyrolyzed in the upper portion of the matter bed to form pyrolysis products from the pyrolyzed matter, at least one of which is capable of being thermally scrubbed. The matter in the lower portion of the matter bed is maintained at a temperature sufficient to thermally scrub at least one of the pyrolysis products passing therethrough. Finally, one of the pyrolysis products capable of being thermally scrubbed is passed through the matter in the lower portion of the bed to thermally scrub the same. An apparatus for performing the gasification method is also disclosed.
