ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE According to the present invention an apparatus for manu- facturing a taped product such as communication cables is possible at production speeds higher than existing machinery. The apparatus comprises a payoff means for paying off at least one continuous filament of material; a positioning device for substantially fixing the position of the at least one continuous filament relative to the center line of the apparatus; a double twist machine downstream from the positioning device for receiving the at least continuous filament and imparting a double twist thereto; a pre-twisting arrangement between the positioning device and the double twist machine for engaging the at least one continuous filament and imparting a predetermined transitory twist thereto between the positioning device and the pre- twisting arrangement, a tape applying dispenser for dispensing and applying at least one continuous tape to the at least one continuous filament between the positioning device and the pre-twisting arrangement, and a control for controlling the rotation speed of said pre-twisting arrangement relative to the rotation speed of said double twist machine to thereby control the tape tension on the taped product. This apparatus and the method thereof are capable of higher production speeds while maintaining the acceptable quality of the final product.
