A reactor for the oxidation of a precursor to an aromatic carboxylic acid or ester thereof in a liquid phase reaction mixture is disclosed. The reactor (1) comprises an elongate vessel, substantially vertical in use, having an upper mixing element (5) and a lower mixing element (3), characterised in that the upper mixing element (5) is an axial pumping impeller and the lower mixing element (3) is a radial pumping impeller. A process of producing a carboxylic acid or ester thereof in a reactor of the invention is also disclosed. In use, the configuration of mixing elements leads to three highly turbulent mixing zones. In a preferred embodiment of the process of the present invention oxidant, from one inlet, and solvent, precursor and catalyst, are introduced directly into a mixing zone. The highly turbulent mixing zones lead to rapid mass transfer suppressing the formation of unwanted, coloured by-products and reduced reactor fouling.
L'invention se rapporte à un réacteur conçu pour l'oxydation d'un précurseur en un acide carboxylique aromatique ou en ester d'un tel acide dans un mélange réactionnel en phase liquide. Ce réacteur (1) comporte une cuve oblongue, sensiblement verticale en cours d'utilisation, ayant un élément de mélange supérieur (5) et un élément de mélange inférieur (3), et elle se caractérise en ce que l'élément de mélange supérieur (5) est une pompe à palettes axiale et l'élément de mélange inférieur (3) est une pompe à palettes radiale. L'invention se rapporte également à un procédé de production d'un acide carboxylique ou d'un ester d'un tel acide dans un réacteur tel que celui décrit ci-dessus. En cours d'utilisation, la structure des éléments de mélange conduit à trois zones de mélange fortement turbulentes. Dans un mode de réalisation préféré du procédé de la présente invention, un oxydant, provenant d'un orifice d'entrée, et un solvant, un précurseur et un catalyseur, sont introduits directement dans une zone de mélange. Les zones de mélange fortement turbulentes permettent d'obtenir un transfert de masse rapide, ce qui supprime la formation de produits dérivés non désirés, colorés, et permet un encrassement réduit du réacteur.
