A method of producing a semi-solid material without stirring, including heating a metal alloy to form a metallic melt (M), transferring a select amount of the melt (M) into a vessel (80, 200, 300), nucleating the melt (M) by regulating the transferring of the melt (M) into the vessel (80, 200, 300), and crystallizing the melt (M) within the vessel (80, 200, 300) by cooling the melt (M) at a controlled rate to produce a semi-solid material (S) having a microstructure comprising rounded solid particles dispersed in a liquid metal matrix. In one form of the invention, a temperature-controlled shot sleeve (80) is provided for receiving and cooling an amount of metallic melt (M) at a controlled rate to produce the semi-solid material (S). The shot sleeve (80) has a number of heat transfer zones (102a, 102b) adapted to independently control the temperature of the melt (M) disposed adjacent various portions of the shot sleeve (80). The shot sleeve (80) also includes a ram (84) operable to discharge the semi-solid material (S) directly into a die mold (90) to form a near-net-shape part.
L'invention concerne un procédé de production d'une matière semi-solide sans brassage. Ce procédé consiste : - à chauffer un alliage métallique pour obtenir une masse métallique fondue (M) ; - à transférer une quantité sélectionnée de la masse fondue (M) dans une cuve (80, 200, 300) ; - à nucléer la masse fondue (M) par régulation du transfert de la masse fondue (M) dans la cuve (80, 200, 300) et à cristalliser la masse fondue (M) dans la cuve (80, 200, 300) par refroidissement de cette masse fondue (M) à une vitesse contrôlée pour obtenir une matière semi-solide (S) ayant une micro-structure comprenant des particules solides arrondies dispersées dans une matrice de métal liquide. Selon un aspect de l'invention, un conteneur à température contrôlée (80) est destiné à recevoir une certaine quantité de masse métallique fondue (M) et à la refroidir à une vitesse contrôlée pour obtenir ladite matière semi-solide (S). Le conteneur (80) comporte un certain nombre de zones de transfert de chaleur (102a, 102b) conçues pour commander indépendamment la température de la masse fondue (M) adjacente à différentes sections du conteneur (80). Le conteneur (80) comprend également un piston (84) qui fonctionne pour décharger la matière semi-solide (S) directement dans un moule de coulée sous pression (90) pour former une pièce près de la cote désirée.
