A method of and apparatus for collecting a sample from an object, for analysis in an analyzer, provides a substrate which is inert so as not to interfere with any sample and not to suppress any sample. The substrate is mounted in a fixed retaining means, to hold the substrate stationary and to present the substrate for contact with an object; for example the substrate can be mounted facing upwards. Then, an object is presented to the substrate and one side of the object of the object is rubbed against the substrate, to transfer a sample of trace particles and liquids onto the substrate.The trace particles and liquids are then desorbed into the inlet of an analyzer for analysis. The invention provides a simple technique for collecting a sample from travel documents and the like, to check to see if an individual has been handling, for example, drugs or explosives.
Méthode et appareil servant à prélever un échantillon sur un objet, aux fins d'analyse dans un analyseur. L'appareil présente un substrat inerte n'interférant avec aucun échantillon et empêchant la suppression des échantillons. Le substrat est installé à l'intérieur d'un mécanisme de retenue fixe destiné à le maintenir en place et à le mettre en contact avec un objet. Par exemple, le substrat peut être installé face vers le haut. Un objet est ensuite amené vers le substrat de manière à ce qu'un de ses côtés effleure le substrat en vue du transfert d'un échantillon de traces de particules et de liquides sur le substrat. Ces traces sont ensuite soumises à la désorption dans l'entrée d'un analyseur aux fins d'analyse. L'invention met en oeuvre une technique simple de collecte d'échantillons à partir de documents de voyage et de documents semblables afin de vérifier si un individu a manipulé des drogues ou des explosifs, par exemple.
