A tyre tread compacting apparatus 110 includes a carrier 112 for carrying a part 94 of a tyre to be disposed of, the carrier 112 having a pair of opposed sides. A mounting arrangement is arranged on a first side of the carrier 112 for mounting on a support formation. A coiling mechanism 122 is arranged on an opposed, second side of the carrier 112 for coiling the part 94 of a tyre to be disposed of into a compacted form. A tyre coiling tool 124 is provided to be arranged in juxtaposition to the carrier 112 to provide mechanical advantage to assist in coiling the part 94 of the tyre about the coiling mechanism 122.
