The invention relates to an apparatus for applying a fluid or pasty medium to a continuous material web, particularly one made of paper or cardboard, having at least one application unit (1) for said fluid or pasty medium, comprising a roll (2) assigned to said application unit (1) for receiving said fluid or pasty medium in the case of an indirect application or for supplying said web in the event of a direct application, further comprising an application blade (6), and a cleaning blade (7) arranged against the direction of rotation (P) of said roll (2) at a distance from said application blade (6), said cleaning blade (7) limiting by means of said application blade (6) an application chamber (5) for said fluid or pasty medium and having a blade element (12) extending across the width of said web and arranged within a blade base (13). Said blade element (12) is movably arranged in a direction running essentially parallel to its longitudinal extension.
