ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for applying a high frequency electric field and pressure on workpieces. The apparatus comprises a resonant cavity wherein the workpieces on which a high fre- quency operation is to be performed can be enclosed and pres- sure can be applied by an arrangement of platen members. A triode valve is provided having an anode which is connected to the interior of the resonant cavity. A variable tuner is con- nected between a grid on the valve and a feedback coil is con- tained within the resonant cavity. A motor is coupled to a movable plate of a variable capacitor and operable to move the variable plate to vary the capacitance of the capacitor which constitutes the variable tuner. A signalling circuit, sensitive to changes in the grid current of the valve, is operable to cause the motor to vary the variable capacitor to bring the grid current to a predetermined value and thereafter to return the grid current to the said value should it deviate therefrom.
