This invention relates to a feeder apparatus (16) for applying roofing granules (17), such as anti - microorganism granules or other specialty granules or even prime granules (24), to a continuously moving asphaltic strip (14) in a controlled and accurate manner. The apparatus (16) dispenses roofing granules (17) in the form of a uniform curtain (18, 19) having well-defined edges. The output of granules (17) from the feeder (16) may be varied, and may depend upon the linear speed at which the asphaltic strip (14) is moving beneath the feeder (16). The invention therefore may include a control (90) system for ensuring accurate dispensing of granules (17) over a controlled region of the strip material (14), and may include sensing means for monitoring operational parameters of the manufacturing line (92) and granule feeder apparatus (16). The control system (90) may include a computer or other programmable logic controller.
