Devices for determining the flow potential especially of fluid process substances (waste water) are known which comprise a sample vessel (30) with an electrically insulating cylindrical inner section (31), a large-diameter filter section (32) above and ad- joining the latter electrodes (34, 35) substantially in the region of the ends of the cylindrical inner section, an insulating piston (33) which can reciprocate in the cylindrical inner section (31) with a defined, slight clearance and devices to measure the charge shift between the electrodes. In order to automate the determination of polyelectrolytes it is proposed to provide an outlet pipe (41, 42) opening into the base of the cylindrical section, a rinsing pipe (26) with a valve for the controlled supply of rinsing fluid into the filter section (32) and a control system (22), which is connected to devices for driving the piston (33), a valve (28) in the outlet pipe and the rinsing valve (27) and is so designed that after every polyelectrolyte determination, the substance examined is drained off via the outlet pipe through the movement of the piston.
