A washing device is provided which can be used in solid phase heterogeneous immunoassays, using a solid support in the form of magnetic balls. The washing device includes four means for application of a magnetic field to the lower part of a plurality of test tubes containing a sample to be analysed and at least one reagent appropriate to assays to be carried out. One of the reagents consists of magnetic balls which are covered with a substance binding specifically to a substance to be detected, in suspension in a suitable liquid. The magnetic balls consist of an organic matrix enclosing a magnetic charge. The magnetic balls have a magnetizable-material-mass/non-magnetizable-material- mass ratio greater than, or equal to, 45%. Each of the means for the application of a magnetic field consists of a pair of magnets arranged face-to-face and on both sides of two consecutive test tubes. Each pair of magnets is connected to a metallic armature for channelling magnetic flux lines of the magnets so that application of the magnetic field is limited solely to the two consecutive test tubes at a time. The washing device also includes a washing head which includes the following on a means holder, namely four suction means for suction of the liquid contained in the test tubes, three washing means distribution means for distribution of a washing liquid to the test tubes, and one enzyme substrate distribution means for distribution of an enzyme substrate. The suction means and the distribution means are arranged so that the first suction means is necessarily used first when starting the assay and the last means is the distribution means of the enzyme substrate. The washing device is fixed along a horizontal axis.
