ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE: A continuous casting apparatus comprising a casting vessel having a closable pouring opening for pouring metal through a protective tube into a flow-through vessel arranged beneath the pouring opening and into which vessel the outlet end of the protective tube extends, and means for changing the protective tube. The tube is movable along guide means and between a sub- stantially horizontal position removed from the pouring opening and a vertical position beneath the pouring opening. The guide means define paths of movement of the inlet end and the outlet end of the tube between the two positions such that the inlet end moves along a substantially horizontal path and the outlet end moves along a substantially vertical path within the flow- through vessel. This apparatus enables the protective tube to be introduced into and removed from the casting vessel without the need for raising and lowering the casting vessel.
