A press is charged with a compressible mass by displacing a container for the mass back and forth over a surface provided with an opening communicating with the mold. The front and rear walls of the chamber containing the mass are V-shaped and have their apexes oriented in the same direction so that the material to be pressed is distributed uniformly not only in the forward and back direction but also side to side as the container is moved back and forth over the mold opening.
