An apparatus for charging batteries of electric vehicles, which have an electronic control device with a regeneration option. The apparatus has a d.c current source in a charging station and contacts for connecting the d.c. source in the changing station with the electric vehicle. The regeneration option of the electronic control device is used as the charge-control circuit. This permits the creation of an actual charging lane that has contact rails, with which electric vehicles come automatically into electrical contact by wiper contacts when entering the charging lane. Since each electric vehicle has an individual control circuit for driving and regeneration, and therefore its own charge-control circuit, it is possible to charge the batteries of differently equipped electric vehicles via their wiper contacts by the same d.c. current source.
