ABSTRACT A blood gas/electrolyte analysis system is provided for monitoring the chemical characteristics of blood samples. In use, a blood sample is introduced into a disposable cartridge which contains a bank of electrodes capable of generating electrical signals proportional to distinct characteristics of blood and which contains at least one solution of known chemical characteristics to calibrate the electrodes. The cartridge is inserted into an analysis machine which includes a microprocessor, a keyboard whereby the operator can program the microprocessor to institute automatic samplings at selected intervals, an LED display, and a printer. Following use, the cartridge is discarded and replaced by another cartridge, whereupon the system is ready for subsequent use.
