ABSTRACT An apparatus for cleaning and preserving vertical or inclined surfaces, such as the sides of ships, is disclosed. The apparatus comprises a travelling platform adapted to travel along an upper edge of a deck, along a rail. A boom is hinged to the platform to pivot about a vertical axis. A mast is mounted, on the boom to pivot about vertical and horizontal axes and carries a cleaning device at its free end. The apparatus, has a water tank attached to tile platform and extending its length. A dock water line extends along the dock and has a plurality of spaced, valved take-off points confront- ing an inlet to the water tank. The inlet extends substantially the entire length of the platform. An automatic control is provided for the valved take-offs so that the water tank can be filled when necessary.
