ABSTRACT Apparatus for cleaving optical fibers is disclosed. The apparatus includes a bore for receiving a fiber and two spaced clamping members for engaging and holding the fiber at two respective longitudinal locations in the bore. The clamping members are resiliently biased relatively away from each other so as to place the portion of the fiber between the two clamping members under tension. A scribing tool has a sharp point engageable with the fiber on the portion under tension and a backing member holding the fiber in opposition to the sharp point. The scribing tool is rotatably mounted on the apparatus so that the point and backing member can be rotated completely around the fiber which then breaks at the resulting scored line. The result is a precise 90° face unaccompanied by appreciable bending or twisting.
