The invention relates to an apparatus (5, 105, 205, ...) for collection of airway gases from a subject comprising a first means (20, 120, 122, 212, 220, 320, ...) for producing closure of the velum of the subject, and a second means (30, 130, 230, 330, ...) for collection of the airway gases, wherein the first and second means need not be integral with each other.
