ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An optical scanning apparatus comprises a scanning device for linearly scanning an incident beam of light from a light source, a concave mirror for receiving and reflecting the scanned incident beam from the scanning device and a cylindrical lens in the path of the scanned incident beam reflected by the concave mirror for deflect- ing the beam onto a surface to be scanned, whereby light reflected from that surface in a scanned reflected beam passes back through the cylindrical lens and, separated from the incident beam, falls on the concave mirror and is reflected to the scanning device, from which it issues as a positionally fixed reflected beam. A deflection mirror deflects the scanned reflected beam so that the scanned reflected beam falls on the scanning device so as to over- lap the location of the scanning device on which the incident beam from the light source falls, whereby the reflected beam and incident beam lie on divergent paths; and a light collector spaced from the light source lies on the path from which the reflected beam travels from the scanning device.
