ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for compacting granular molding materials, particularly foundry molding sand, has a passageway between the pressure chamber and the mold unit with a variable transverse cross-sectional area provided by an adapter. The variation in the passageway cross- sectional area is preferably provided by a replaceable insert. The apparatus permits treatment of different mold unit configurations and sizes. -9-
