Apparatus for compacting swarf to form a billet for subsequent hot working is disclosed. The apparatus includes a die (70) comprising a number of portions (80) defining a cavity (78) for holding a tube in which the swarf is compacted by one or more rams (20). The die portions are surrounded by one or more sleeves (72) which hold them together. The sleeves can be moved in the axial direction to allow the die portions to be separated in the radial direction to release the billet. The sleeves are slidably mount- ed in a housing (74) and are moved apart axially by jacks (108). The outer face of the die and the sleeves are complementally tap- ered to assist release of the sleeves. Charge boxes (16) are provided at each end of the die and swarf is fed from the charge boxes by the rams (20) into both ends of the cavity (78). The die and housing are mounted on a pedestal (116) so as to pivot into axial alignment with mechanisms (118, 120) which grip the ends of the die portions and separate them radially to release the billet. An empty tube can be fed into the die cavity through the mechanism (120) and the billet can be fed through the mechanism (118) af- ter it has been ejected from the die cavity.
