ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus is provided (Fig. 2) for a two phase gas and liquid mixture contact in an absorption tower or reactor (10') having at least one auxiliary bed (22) dis- posed above the main bed (21). Each auxiliary bed has separate liquid and gas bypasses (24, 23) comprising hollow tubing of relatively different lengths extending through the auxiliary bed (22). The gas bypass tubing (23) projects to a greater height above the auxiliary bed (22) than the liquid bypass tubing (24). This tubing by- pass arrangement allows for a low pressure drop bypass of the auxiliary bed to the main bed by the liquid and gas when the auxiliary bed becomes fouled, whereby the appara- tus life is substantially prolonged.
