An apparatus for counting empty cans includes a hopper having an underlying throat which merges into an enlarged cavity. The throat has a cross-sectional dimension just slightly larger than a side elevation section of one of the empty cans. An elongate conveyor extension support extends through a side wall of the hopper upwardly and outwardly from the hopper. An endless loop conveyor is supported by the side wall of the hopper and the conveyor extension support. The endless loop conveyor extends up through the throat and encircles the side wall. A series of pick up buckets carried by the conveyor travels up the throat of the hopper, picks up one of the empty cans, carries it to a second end of the conveyor extension support and then propels it from the conveyor past a counting sensor.
