The invention is an apparatus used to break the ice that forms on an overhead cable. It has a head designed to hang from a cable, including an opening designed to fit over an ice-covered cable. The head includes remote-controllable mechanical means to break the ice. The apparatus also includes a handle having an initial extremity attached to the head and a second extremity. The handle includes a trigger operationally connected to the said mechanical means to activate these means momentarily. When the head is placed over a cable, an operator activates the trigger, which activates the mechanical means, shattering the ice accumulated on the cable. The apparatus preferably includes a pneumatic piston located near the head, powered by an air compressor on the ground and connected to the piston by a hose located inside the handle. The piston compresses a spring and includes a mass at its extremity. An operator activates the trigger, which allows the spring to decompress, forcing the mass to shatter the ice accumulated on the cable. The apparatus can break ice accumulations up to 8 cm in diameter on cables located at a height approximately 10 cm from the ground.
