2101171 9212818 PCTABS00014 An apparatus for destroying used hypodermic needles includes a rotating electrode wheel (64), a stationary electrode element (16) which is positioned in closely spaced relation to the electrode wheel (64) and a guide member (56) for guiding a hypodermic needle (27) inserted into the apparatus so that it is advanced into electrical contact with the electrode wheel (64) and the electrode element (16) in order to electrically destroy the needles (27). The apparatus further includes a sensor (40) for automatically energizing electrode wheel (64) and the electrode element (16) when an operator approaches the apparatus, and a disposable cartridge assembly (24) for receiving and containing debris generated as needles are destroyed in the apparatus.
