An apparatus and a method for detecting the existence of a telephone line connection while off hook that includes a data access arrangement (200) having a holding current path (210) and an off hook switch (230). A ring detect circuit (250) is included having a current sensing device (270) for detecting a holding current. The current sensing device (270) is coupled to the off hook switch (230) of the data access arrangement (200) such that the holding current flows through the holding current path (210) of the data access arrangement (200) and the current sensing device (270) of the ring detect circuit (250) when the off hook switch (230) is closed, thereby providing a means of verifying the existence of the holding current through the holtling current path (210).
