2071868 9200500 PCTABS00010 An apparatus (10) for determining an area of a surface which is traversed and treated by an object during a unit of time is configured for use with a movable object (11) that has a first axis (17) of a known length. The object is capable of movement along a second axis (19) and the first and second axes (17, 19) define an angle between them which is other than 0·. A signalling means (28) includes a sensor (27) which may be mounted in a motion-sensing relationship to the object (11) for providing a motion signal when the object (11) moves a distance along the second axis (19). The motion signal has a predetermined relationship to that distance. A timing means (45) repetitively provides a plurality of timing signals, each sequential pair of which defines an interval of time of known duration. A computing means (43) is coupled to the timing means (45) and to the signalling means (28) for receiving at least one sequential pair of timing signals and at least one motion signal. The computing means (43) thereby initiates a display of the area of the surface which is traversed by the first axis (17) per unit of time and therefore treated as the object (11) moves along the second axis (19).
