An apparatus for determining a period of time of an acoustic wave in a fluid in a pipe where the wave is provided to the fluid from the outside of the pipe and a signal is obtained corresponding to when the wave has traversed the pipe and the fluid therein, and signal processing means measures the period of time the wave is in the fluid based on the signal, the signal processing means being in communication with means providing the acoustic wave. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for determining sound velocity of fluid flowing in a pipe comprising transmitting acoustic energy into the fluid flowing in the pipe such that the energy takes a path through the pipe, receiving the acoustic energy after it passes out of the fluid, measuring the time the energy takes to pass through the fluid, and identifying sound velocity of the fluid from the time measured. The apparatus also allows determination of the temperature of the fluid.
Un appareil permettant de déterminer la durée d'une onde acoustique dans le fluide d'un tube où l'onde parvient au fluide de l'extérieur du tube et où un signal se déclenche lorsque l'onde traverse le tube et le fluide qui s'y trouve; le dispositif lié au traitement de signal permet de mesurer la période de temps où l'onde se trouve dans le fluide en se fondant sur le signal, le dispositif du traitement de signal communiquant avec le dispositif qui fournit l'onde acoustique. On décrit également une méthode et un appareil pour déterminer la vitesse du son d'un fluide qui circule dans un tube comportant la transmission d'énergie acoustique dans le fluide qui circule dans le tube de sorte que l'énergie suit une voie à travers le tube, en recevant l'énergie acoustique après sa sortie du fluide, en mesurant le temps nécessaire pour que l'énergie passe à travers le fluide, et en identifiant la vitesse du son dans le milieu fluide à partir du temps mesuré. L'appareil permet également de déterminer la température du fluide.
