ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus is disclosed for determining the position of a focussing plans of an image within an optical device which includes an optical imaging system. The apparatus is provided with a pair of optical deflecting systems so disposed and arranged in front of the optical imaging system that each half pupil of the optical imaging system receives light exclusively from a respective one of the deflecting systems of the pair. An object viewed by the imaging system is imaged at or near an optical grating and relative motion between the image and the grating is effected. Photo-electric receiver means are arranged to generate electrical output signals in response to respective ones of partial light fluxes received from the grating and the output signals are processed to provide further output signals indicative of the position of the focal plans. Preferably, a reference beam is transmitted along paths traversed by the partial light fluxes corresponding to the respective pupil halves of the imaging system. Further electrical signals indicative of changes in transmission characteristics of at least one of the paths are generated photo- electrically in response to light from the reference beam.
