An apparatus for determining a period of time of an acoustic wave in a fluid in a pipe where the wave is provided to the fluid from the outside of the pipe and a signal is obtained corresponding to when the wave has traversed the pipe and the fluid therein, and signal processing means measures the period of time the wave is in the fluid based on the signal, the signal processing means being in communication with means providing the acoustic wave. Also disclosed is a method and apparatus for determining sound velocity of fluid flowing in a pipe comprising transmitting acoustic energy into the fluid flowing in the pipe such that the energy takes a path through the pipe, receiving the acoustic energy after it passes out of the fluid, measuring the time the energy takes to pass through the fluid, and identifying sound velocity of the fluid from the time measured. The apparatus also allows determination of the temperature of the fluid.
Un appareil pour déterminer une durée d'une onde acoustique dans un fluide dans un tuyau où l'onde est amenée dans le fluide par l'extérieur du tuyau et un signal obtenu correspond au moment où l'onde a traversé le tuyau et le fluide qu'il contient. Un dispositif de traitement du signal mesure la période pendant laquelle l'onde est dans le liquide en fonction du signal, le dispositif de traitement du signal étant en communication avec le dispositif d'émission de l'onde acoustique. L'invention porte aussi sur une méthode et un appareil pour déterminer la vitesse du son du liquide circulant dans un tuyau et comprenant la transmission de l'énergie acoustique dans le fluide circulant dans le tuyau de sorte que cette énergie suit un trajet dans le tuyau, la réception de l'énergie acoustique après qu'elle ait traversé le fluide, la mesure du temps que met l'énergie à traverser le fluide et la détermination de la vitesse du son du fluide à partir du temps mesuré. L'appareil permet aussi la détermination de la température du fluide.
