ABSTRACT The present invention relates to impovements in a commercial apparatus for non-tubular cracking of heavy hydrocarbon feeds for the purposes of producing ethylene and other valuable olefin products as well as chemical grade synthesis gas. The prior art cracking apparatuses fail to employ a practical and economical process for producing high yields of ethylene by the diacritic cracking of heavy hydrocarbon feed stocks at elevated pressures in such a way that the reactor and subsequent heat exchange equipment will not adversely affected by severe coking. The apparatus of the present invention includes a combustor for burning a fuel with oxygen to provide the combustion products for the reactor. The combustor is water cooled and includes gas filming to avoid coking in the combustor by preventing impingement of the fuel and combustion products on the combustor walls. The reactor is of reduced cross-section, also preferably utilizing gas filming. Feed stock injectors are provided adjacent to reactor inlet for injecting the feed stock at a velocity sufficient to transverse approximately 60 to 70 percent of the reactor diameter. This encourages rapid heating of the injected feed stock while avoiding feed stock impingement of the reactor wall. Adjacent the outlet end of the reactor is quench section to reduce the stream temperature below that at which further cracking will take place, with the quench injectors also being gas filmed to avoid coking thereof.
