ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE An apparatus for distributing solids of granular or lump form over an area of a particular width. The apparatus comprises a wheeled carriage which may be reciprocated between a pair of end positions which correspond to the width. The carriage carries a longitudinal conveyor belt which is charged with solids to be distributed and has a discharge end which is moved above the width. The movement of the carriage is limited at each end by an elastic energy storage device. The storage devices comprises buffers displaceable in guides against a spring which in their deformed positions define the end positions of the carriage.
