ABSTRACT This invention relates to an apparatus for encoding and transmitting an image. The apparatus uses a differential pulse code modulation system including a transmission circuit for effecting a datum compression and transmission by achieving a differential pulse modulation on a digital input signal and a reception circuit corresponding to the transmission circuit. The transmission circuit includes an estimating circuit for calculating an estimate for the digital input signal. A movement detection circuit is used for outputting a differential signal depending on an estimated error signal. The differential signal is then quantized by an quantizing circuit. The quantized transmission signal is temporarily stored in an transmission data buffer circuit. Threshold values are generated by a threshold generating circuit. A local decoding circuit decodes the quantized signal to calculate the estimation signal. The reception circuit will then decode and regenerate the signal.
