ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Methods and apparatus are disclosed for forming a precision three-dimensional surface to plastic clad optical fibers. The plastic cladding of a fiber end is deformed to conform to the geometry of the interstice formed between at least three tangential and parallel cylinders. The cylinders are dimensioned such that the clad wire has a greater diameter than the largest circle which can be drawn in the interstice between the cylinders when they are in tangential contact so that, with the cylinder initially apart and the clad fiber end inserted in the inter- stice, the cylinders can be closed together to deform the plastic cladding. The precision three-dimensional fiber end enables accurate low loss coupling between the fibers to be achieved through the accurate reference planes presented.
