ABSTRACT (Fig. 3) APPARATUS FOR GENERATING A VISUAL DISPLAY A computer-generated-image system for a simulator includes a pattern processor (20) in which intensity modulation data stored in tile stores (38) is addressed by inverse perspective transformed coordinates Xe, Ye derived from CRT screen pixel coordinates Xs, Ys. Parts of the transformed coordinates Xe, Ye are decoded into address pointers by successive lookup processes at a macro-map store (51) and a tile map store (53). A map number (39) supplied to accompany the display of a polygonal surface selects a respective group of pointers at the macro-map store (51), and corresponding groups of tile numbers at the pattern store (53). Each tile number is used with low significance address bits derived from the Xe, Ye coordinates to provide addresses to individual intensity modulation values in the tile store (38).
