An apparatus (100) for producing large diameter monocrystalline Group III-V, II-VI compounds that have reduced crystal defect density, improved crystal growth yield, and improved bulk material characteristics. The apparatus (100) comprises a crucible or boat (130), an ampoule (120) that contains the crucible or boat (130), a heating unit (123) disposed about the ampoule (120), and a liner (122) disposed between the heating unit (123) and the ampoule (120). The liner (122) is preferably composed of a quartz material. When the liner (122) and the ampoule (120) are made of the same material, such as quartz, the thermal expansion coefficients of the liner (122) and ampoule (120) are the same, which significantly increases the lifetime of the liner (122) and the single-crystal yield.
