ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus for advancing belaying, or retracting a longitudinal element, such as a cable, by means of engagement with an endless belt driven by a reversible motor in a predetermined endless path geometrically formed to guide and constrain the belt in the path by means of camming action along and around a support element. The cable is free to enter the apparatus engaging the belt at either end of the support element, to be advanced, belayed, or retracted by the belt along this predetermined path.
