ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Apparatus is provided for handling viscous material and particularly for spreading the viscous material over a surface. The apparatus is suitable for use with equipment for applying a bead of gasket-forming material to a mateable surface of a work- piece. This equipment includes a screen having a porous pattern portion through which the gasket-forming material is forced to form a bead of desired size and shape on a transfer surface. The bead of the material is then transferred to the mateable surface of the workpiece. The spreading apparatus for spreading the gasket-forming material on the screen and forcing it through the porous portion includes two blades which are supported in spaced relationship by separate supporting members. the two members are moved as a unit back and forth in a path over the screen, and the blades are alternately raised and lowered at end portions of the path so that a spreading action accurs in both directions. In a preferred form, one of the blades is a wiper blade which does not contact the screen but spreads the material over it in a thin layer when the blades move in one direction, while the other blade is a squeegee blade which then forces the material through the porous portions when the blades move in the other direction.
