ABSTRACT An oven for heating electrically conductive bulk materials by means of resistance heating, comprises an inlet, an outlet and, arranged between inlet and outlet, end and side walls forming an oven chamber. As a means of improving such an apparatus so that the bulk material can be uniformly heated while nevertheless keeping the geometrical shape of the oven chamber as simple as possible, so that ordinary commercial materials can be used without special finishing, the invention provides for at least two pairs of electrodes to be fixed to opposed end walls and electrically disconnected from one another. This avoids current breakdowns with their serious consequences and enables the paths of the currents to be influenced and controlled. In one embodiment there are several pairs of electrodes arranged one above the other and the top three pairs are provided with bars which project inwardly towards the center of the oven chamber. The bars may be adjustable in length but, in any event, the bars of the top electrode pair project further than the bars of the next electrode pair and so on.
