An apparatus for helically assembling filaments on an advancing core or about a common axis comprises a supply spool assembly mounted for rotation about an axis and having filaments wound thereon, and a flyer mounted for rotation about the same axis so that rotational movement thereof encompasses the supply spool assembly. The filaments are directly guided from the supply spool assembly onto the flyer to minimize the backtwist effect. The filaments are wound together as they pass through a closing die. A capstan is provided downstream of the closing die to impart an advancing speed to the filaments. A control system allows for the control of the number of revolutions of the flyer per unit length of filaments advancing through the closing die to obtain a constant helical pitch. The tension in the filaments is controlled by hysteresis brakes acting on the supply spool assembly. The control system is operational to adjust the torque exerted by the brakes as filaments are unwound from the supply spool assembly.
