ABSTRACT The hardening apparatus of the invention is constructed such that a heated metallic pipe is held for rotation by holding means by clamping the pipe from both above and below, the metallic pipe is immersed in cooling water in a tank by immersion means, cooling water is injected to both the inner and outer sides of the metallic pipe by cooling water injection means, thereby rapidly cooling the metallic pipe, and thereafter, the metallic pipe is taken out of the tank by unloading means. The apparatus of the invention does not cause a metallic pipe to drop from a high level, preventing the formation of surface flaws, and causes the metallic pipe to rotate to thereby facilitate substantial agitation of cooling water and continuously change the point of contact of the metallic pipe with the holding means, thereby rapidly and uniformly cooling the metallic pipe to achieve satisfactory hardening.
