- 9 - ABSTRACT An apparatus for impact protection on the front passenger side of a motor vehicle comprises an air bag unit, which is inserted in an opening of the instrument panel and comprises a collapsed inflatable air bag and a covering hood, which is made of a layer of elastic plastic and covers the air bag and along a rated tear line is di- vided into a section which is foldable to the top edge of the instrument panel and a section which is foldable to- ward the bottom edge of the instrument panel. Each of said sections comprises a hinge zone. To permit the use of a concave covering hood, the plastic layer contains in each of said sections a reinforcing layer made of a net- like insert of hard plastic and formed with a bulge in the hinge zone.
