An apparatus for injecting one or more tires into rotary kilns includes an inner shroud mounted within the kiln shell and shaped to provide a tangential entry path for tires through the shell and into the material being treated, and a gate, mounted externally of the shell and communicating with the shroud for receiving tires and conveying tires to the shroud. The gate also prevents the escape of material and gases from within the kiln and limits the entrance of outside air into the kiln through the apparatus. The shroud preferably opens in a direction facing the opposite of the direction of kiln rotation, thereby minimizing the amount of material being treated which enters the shroud. The shroud also is shaped to limit the protrusion above the level of material being treated within the kiln. The gate includes a counterweighed door and cam actuation means which opens the door when the apparatus is oriented approximately horizontal at a three o'clock position, and closed when the apparatus is oriented substantially vertically at a twelve o'clock position. The door may also be actuated with an external cam. The apparatus includes a table with a double-acting cylinder motor for feeding tires onto the table, and an accumulator conveyor which feeds the table, and an inclined or vertical conveyor which transports tires to the accumulator conveyor.
