ABSTRACT Reducing gas is injected into a shaft furnace by means of a gas supply duct, an injection tube, and a tuyere co-axial with the injection tube. The injection tube comprises a plasma furnace co-axial with and adjacent to the tuyere. While the reducing gas is being injected into the shaft furnace a plasma is generated in the plasma furnace to heat the reducing gas.
