A method of separating ions is disclosed, including a step of affecting a flow of a gas for desolvating ions, the ions being introduced from an ionization source. Also disclosed is an apparatus for separating ions, having a diffuser disposed between a first aperture and a second aperture of a FAIMS, for diffusing a flow of gas that is provided from a third aperture of the FAIMS, prior to the flow of gas passing through either one of the first aperture and the second aperture.
