ABSTRACT Apparatus for joining the elements of a thermally insulated composite profile that consists of two metal profiles 24, 25 and at least one insulating rod 47) includes knurled rollers 31, by which the outer channel struts 23, 24 are deformed and pressed onto the insulating rod 47, and provided with a knur- led band. The knurled rollers 31 have bevelled peripheral surfaces 45, 46 pro- vided with serrations, the root between adjacent teeth being parallel to the peripheral surfaces. The knurled roller 31 is mounted so as to be able to slide in the direction of the axis of rotation in a clamp formed by two collars 33, 34. The amount of movement possible from the centre position amounts to 0.5 to 1.0 mm to each side. As a result of this floating mounting of the knur- led rollers, it is possible to compensate for alignment errors between the knur- led roller and the composite profile when the channel struts 23, 25 are being shaped, such errors resulting from an unfavourable accumulation of tolerances in the individual components. The knurled rollers are secured to a driven shaft and advance the joint profile through the apparatus, the joint profile being additionally supported by horizontal and vertical guide rollers 12, 16.
