A B S T R A C T An apparatus for laterally deflecting specific articles selected according to a criterion from a first path of travel to a second path of travel of the deflect- ed articles, said apparatus comprising deflecting means in the form of deflecting segments stationary in the direction of travel of the articles to be deflected, while being extensible and retractable substantially in transverse direction thereof, or in the form of gas nozzles, said deflecting means deflecting the articles to be deflected by an incremental amount of the total deflection, characterized in that the working face of each deflecting segment is arranged at an angle with respect to the direction of travel along the first path of travel or that the intensity of the gas nozzles is graduated, such that the velocity component of an article to be deflected transversely of the direction of con- veyance is increased, that the last deflecting segment is extensible less than the amount of total deflection, or that the article, after having left the last gas nozzle, has been deflected less than the total deflection, and that the number of deflecting means and the angle of the operative faces, or the intensity of the gas nozzles, respectively, is such that an article to be deflected, after having left the last deflecting means, has a velocity component transversely of the conveying di- rection such that it continues moving to the second path of travel owing to its inertia.
